I love good music. From jazz and classical to pop and rock, many genres tickle my fancy. But I especially love good, Christ-honoring music, and it often seems like that “great album” is difficult to find.

Enter Zach Dodd.

zachdoddZach and I became friends a little less than a year ago. We are fellow worship leaders, we both attended the same seminary and a mutual friend connected us together. Though we’ve not spent an immense amount of time together, we share many of the same passions – Christ, theology, music, missions.

I called Zach a few weeks ago and asked him if he could come lead our church in worship in August. He agreed, and we then decided to meet for lunch last week. In our lunch meeting, I was amazed at the similarities of our lives. We both married really cool wives. We both love leading others to the throne of God in worship. And we both have a passion for orphanages and missions projects overseas.

He and his wife started an organization called “Beggartown” – and it was founded to help an orphanage in Africa. All the proceeds of Zach’s album sales and t-shirt sales go towards the orphanage. Here is a summary of Beggartown’s mission:

Beggartown’s mission is to encourage, equip, challenge, and partner with all people to live God-purposed lives and to serve and engage with people in need through different forms of creative media.

coverIn 2008, Zach finished his newest CD entitled “Children Without Names.” When we met for lunch, he gave me a few copies. And I can’t stop listening to it. I implore you to buy it – and here’s five reasons why:

1) The music. Zach and his band are extremely creative in their songwriting. The tunes are catchy and the instrumentation is fantastic (great guitar and piano work, tasty vocals).

2) The message throughout the music. This album points to Christ like very few others in the Christian pop scene. The Gospel is woven throughout the songs.

3) The theological underpinnings of the music. Zach doesn’t water down the lyrics in his songs. He has a distinct faithfulness to rich, God-honoring theology. He sings about many attributes of God – justice, sovereignty, immutability, etc. He has a song about Hosea and Gomer and the comparison of God and His unfaithful Wife. He also sings about man’s utter dependance on God. The best part about it: it’s understandable. You don’t feel like you’re sitting in theology class when you listen to this album.

4) The mission of the music. Zach and Carlie are changing the world – at least in the eyes of a child in Africa. They are doing what God commands us to do in the book of Isaiah: “defend the orphan.” This is something I hold dearly to my heart just as Zach does.

5) The man who wrote the music. Not to toot anyone’s horn beyond what is appropriate, but Zach is a pretty neat guy. He used to have a really cool dreadlock-style haircut. Now he just looks like a member of the hair club for men. More than any of that, He loves Jesus Christ.

As a worship leader and graphic designer (not a pro by any means), I understand the challenge to keep things fresh. From background images to video loops, it can be quite difficult to avoid feeling like you’ve been doing the same thing or using the same files time and time again.

MoneyThen you are faced with the cost to download things from stock sites or worship video sites, etc. This can become uber-expensive.

Don’t you wish that there were some free sites out there that have decent resources?

Well, for those of you who are in my shoes – full-time or part-time – I have found some great freebies for you. Feel free to share yours with me as well – I’ll just keep adding to the list.

Here they are:
____________________________________________________________

#1) Stock Xchange. This site provides free stock images to the masses! Much of their work is incredible as it is a compilation of hundreds of artists across the globe. Word of warning: please exercise caution when using ANY stock site. There may be objectionable material.

#2) ConsumingWorship.org. These guys have a nice compilation of worship backgrounds. Very fresh and trendy stuff.

#3) FreeWorshipBackgrounds.com. This site is not as extensive as the others, but for most of the graphics they’ve created, they give you four different color options. This can be very useful when planning out worship sets or designing a PowerPoint template.

#4) OrganicVideos.com. For those of you who that use moving backgrounds, this site has some great looking freebies. If you have a video converter, you can even use these loops to create your own videos.

#5) FreeMotionBackgrounds.com. Similar to the aforementioned site, this site has a few nice video loops that you can download for free. Only a few are available, but if you are like me, you’ll take what you can get!

#6) Photo Bank. This is another free stock site. It is similar to Stock Xchange Once again, please be careful with your searches. The best stuff I’ve found on this site is under the section called “Abstract” > “Backgrounds and Patterns”.

#6) DaFont.com. Fonts can be extremely expensive. That is why this site is such an awesome resource. There are literally hundreds of fonts on that site, and a lot of them are pretty useful.

#7) CreativeMYK.com. This site offers free church-based resources. PSDs, JPEGs, and EPS files are all available.

#8) Stuff I Can Use. This site is particularly helpful with sermon series graphics. It is provided free-of-charge by Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any sites that I can add to this list. It’s tough enough to be creative as it is. “With our powers combined…” :-)

logoEver meet someone from another country and wish you could give them Christian resources in their native tongue? Something that they could read and comprehend better than they could in English? Something that could make the gospel come alive in the language they think and dream in?

Look no further – Gospel Translations is here.

So what exactly is Gospel Translations?

It is a theologically sound, informative web-driven tool that has resources for sharing the Gospel, strengthening your walk with Christ, learning Biblical theology, and dozens of other topics. FREE OF CHARGE!

On their website, the founders of this organization say,

Gospel Translations is dedicated to making gospel-centered books and articles available to Christians all around the world for free. These books and articles are made available to us by Christian publishers, and are translated by teams of volunteers spread out all over the world.

The organization is still pretty new, but their heart is in the right place. Another quote from their website:

We’re still just getting started, but we hope what we have to offer so far helps to teach you about our great Savior, Jesus Christ, whose death on the cross has paid for all our sins and reconciled us to God.

Needless to say, it is one of the best kingdom-minded ideas I’ve seen in a long time. Here is a video that explains their services further:

This site can be especially helpful if you are planning a missions venture or actually preparing to be a missionary. But don’t write it off as just that.

There are millions of international citizens of the USA. We encounter people everyday that call another country their home. This website can be a huge bridge for the gospel with these people. I strongly encourage you to use it.
